Water is normally maintained at a significantly high pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, or shower, in water supply systems. The pressure in the pipe, when reduced as may happen if a water main bursts, pipes freeze or there is unexpectedly high demands on the water system, may be reduced and may allow contaminated water from the ground, storage, or other sources to be drawn into the system.
Another way that an undesirable contaminate may enter the potable water piping is back pressure. Pumps in the water distribution systems, boilers, heat exchanging equipment, or power washing equipment, may be sources of back pressure. A back-flow preventer can be installed to reduce the risk of contamination. In instances such as commercial and/or industrial descaling or when bleaches are used for power washing, a back-flow preventer is very important.
